On Friday, October 2, Syfy launched the third series in the Stargate genre. The two hour premier featured Air (parts 1 & 2) with part 3 to air this coming Friday, October 9.
In these first two hours we are introduced to a handful of the cast of characters, one of which is Dr. Nicholas Rush played by Robert Carlyle. Dr. Rush is the scientific head of the Icarus project which is purposed to uncover the destination of the only 9 symbol address found in the Atlantis database.
In addition to being a genius, Rush exudes confidence. He is a very different character than we were used to seeing in Dr. Rodney McKay in Stargate Atlantis. He is a man of few words, very direct, and willing to make hard decisions. However, he seems to be misunderstood by everyone that is stuck with him on board the Ancient ship Destiny. Some of his companions blame him for their predicament, while others believe he is trying to hide important facts, and only a couple are willing to trust his judgment.
In one scene we see Dr. Rush in his quarters as he picks up a photo of himself along side a female companion. We are not told who this lady is but his mannerism indicate that she is someone special to him. I believe that he has a sense of loss or a sense of longing to be with her once again. I am sure this part of the story will unfold as we get to know more about the characters.
In my opinion, Dr. Nicholas Rush is a very capable scientist and leader who is clouded in an air of mystery which provides much opportunity for him to be misunderstood.

What are your initial thoughts on Dr. Rush?
I liked the character (I've got a soft spot for mysterious men), but it's still a little early to judge for sure.
ReplyDeleteThe first movie with Kurt Russell was okay but not great. The first Stargate TV series was great and an improvement over the first movie. Great story lines, great acting, and great production values. It was one of the best sci-fi TV series ever made.
ReplyDeleteAtlantis was good but the stories were often based on the preposterous alien vampires from space theme. This sort of idiocy was how Earth: Final Conflict got itself canceled. Despite the derivative story line Atlantis was worth watching.
Now they make something that is more of a sequel to the space soap opera Battlestar Galactica than anything else. I could not even watch the whole first episode without having my mind wander onto more interesting things. About half way through I went onto the Internet to confirm that the program was the SG that had been announced.
Sadly, it was and as far as I am concerned if they can't make it more like SG-1 then they should just quit.
