The Premier of Stargate Universe Features A Mysterious Dr. Nicholas Rush

Dr. Rush

On Friday, October 2, Syfy launched the third series in the Stargate genre.  The two hour premier featured Air (parts 1 & 2) with part 3 to air this coming Friday, October 9.

In these first two hours we are introduced to a handful of the cast of characters, one of which is Dr. Nicholas Rush played by Robert Carlyle.  Dr. Rush is the scientific head of the Icarus project which is purposed to uncover the destination of the only 9 symbol address found in the Atlantis database.

In addition to being a genius, Rush exudes confidence.  He is a very different character than we were used to seeing in Dr. Rodney McKay in Stargate Atlantis.  He is a man of few words, very direct, and willing to make hard decisions.  However, he seems to be misunderstood by everyone that is stuck with him on board the Ancient ship Destiny.  Some of his companions blame him for their predicament, while others believe he is trying to hide important facts, and only a couple are willing to trust his judgment.

In one scene we see Dr. Rush in his quarters as he picks up a photo of himself along side a female companion.  We are not told who this lady is but his mannerism indicate that she is someone special to him.  I believe that he has a sense of loss or a sense of longing to be with her once again.  I am sure this part of the story will unfold as we get to know more about the characters.

In my opinion, Dr. Nicholas Rush is a very capable scientist and leader who is clouded in an air of mystery which provides much opportunity for him to be misunderstood.

An Interview With Robert Carlyle From Stargate Universe

We are just a few days aware from the premier of Stargate Universe on October 2.  Here is an interview I found with Robert Carlyle.Robert Carlyle ('Stargate Universe')

By Dan French, TV Reporter

Robert Carlyle ('Stargate Universe')

The Stargate franchise suffered a double blow in recent years, with both SG-1 and spinoff Atlantis meeting their (arguably premature) ends. But now fans have something new to look forward to: a brand new spinoff, Stargate Universe! The latest installment follows the adventures of a present-day team, stranded in a far corner of the universe on board the Ancient spaceship Destiny. Leading the cast is Trainspotting's Robert Carlyle, who plays the brilliant-but-twisted scientist Dr. Nicholas Rush. We hooked up with Robert to explore Stargate Universe.

Were you a fan of the original Stargates?
"To be honest, no - I haven't really seen much of it. But it's funny, after I'd agreed to do the show and I got sent all the DVDs - two hundred f**king hours of SG-1 and all the rest of it! - I was surprised how much of it I had actually seen. I'd probably seen about twenty episodes of SG-1 over the years and I didn't see anything at all of Stargate Atlantis but that didn't seem to matter. This is a whole new deal, so I didn't have to sit and watch the whole back catalogue - that would have been a bridge too far!"  Read More…

SGU Site Active On Syfy

Check out the new site for Stargate Universe on the Syfy website. [click here]

Let’s begin meeting the cast for the new show.

Dr. Nicholas Rush -- Robert Carlyle

The scientific head of the Icarus program and a certifiable genius, Dr. Nicholas Rush is one of the most brilliant scientists of his day. Having devoted some of the most difficult years of his life to the program, he knows more than anyone the importance of what is beyond that 9th chevron address. Definitely not the most agreeable aboard the ship, he is without a doubt the mastermind behind most of what goes on, whether people know it or not. Unwilling to bend to any sort of military rule, his focus is always on discovering the secrets to, and purpose of the Destiny.

In the interviews that I have read Dr. Rush’s character is said to be most like that of Jack O’neill

Amanda Tapping On SGU: Stargate Universe

According to a post on SpoilerTV Amanda Tapping will be making an appearance in the premier of SGU: Stargate Universe which debuts on October 2 at 9:00pm on the Syfy channel.

Amanda Tapping says that a new Stargate SG-1 movie could begin production later this year, as soon as the first season of SGU wraps.  "As far as I know, we may start in late fall or early winter this year," Tapping said in an exclusive interview. "And I will slip back into Sam Carter very nicely; I'm looking forward to it."

I am excited to see Samantha Carter appear in SGU but I hope they do a better job writing for her character than they did in Stargate Atlantis.  The few appearances that she had in the Atlantis series did not portray her as the confident take charge woman that she was in SG-1.  She was randomly assertive and quite often deferred to Dr. McKay for decisions she was quite capable of making.  Well that’s just my two cents.  What say you?

What did you think of Samantha Carter in Stargate Atlantis?

What Happened To The Cast Of Atlantis When The Show Was Cancelled

Some have been busy working on other shows.  Looks like a nice clean film.  smile_wink

I think Dr. Mckay was one of the funniest characters thus far in the Stargate legacy.  Although I was not impressed with his early appearances on SG-1 the directors did a great job to temper the characters attitude.  He somehow went from being an over-the-top arrogant jerk to a this guy is hilarious arrogant jerk.  I guess it is because he often times said what many of us wish we could say to others.

What are your thoughts?  Was Dr. Rodney McKay a thumbs up or thumbs down character?  Why?

What Does It Mean To Be “Edgier”

I am looking forward to the start of the season for Syfy’s new show Stargate Universe (SGU).  However, I must admit I am a little apprehensive.  The show is being talked up as being “edgier.”  Most of the time that is slang for “we are going to sex things up,” which I hope isn’t the case.  My 9 year old son has become a fan of the show as well and I would very much like to enjoy sitting beside him as the new story unfolds.
Has Stargate become a family activity for your home?  Do you have any concerns about the new “edgier” show?

Funniest Stargate SG-1 Prank

This is just a little humor from the original SG-1 Series.  Can’t wait to see the chemistry between the actors of the new show.

Do you feel that the relationship between Carter and O’neill should have  been more developed or do you feel that the mystery of the relationship enhanced the show?

When Does Stargate Universe Begin

Stargate Universe is scheduled to air on October 2 and will begin the third series in the Stargate brand.  It will be following Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis.
I am eagerly anticipating the release of this show.  I have purchased all the seasons and movies associated with both of the first two series.  It seems hard to believe that this will be the sixteenth season for Stargate fans.
Are you an avid fan or just checking things out for the first time?

What Is Stargate Universe (SGU)

Stargate Universe (SGU) is the third installment in the the Stargate brand.  It is following 10 seasons of Stargate SG-1 and 5 seasons of Stargate Atlantis.

The talk from producers to the cast members is that SGU is going to be more character driven.  It is out with rubber faced, English speaking aliens and in with juicy drama.  Producers Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper are hoping that this shift will reach a much larger audience by attracting viewers that would normally shy away from the science fiction genre.

Here is the official synopsis of the show:  SGU follows a band of soldiers, scientists and civilians, who must fend for themselves as they are forced through a Stargate when their hidden base comes under attack. The desperate survivors emerge aboard an ancient ship, which is locked on an unknown course and unable to return to Earth. Faced with meeting the most basic needs of food, water and air, the group must unlock the secrets of the ship's Stargate to survive. The danger, adventure and hope they find on board the Destiny will reveal the heroes and villains among them.

I am curious to see what new twists are woven into the SGU series.  I am a big fan of SG-1 and Atlantis and I personally liked the rubber faced aliens.  I enjoyed the story line for both shows and getting caught up in the mythologies that each one created.

What are your thoughts?  Do you anticipate a richer and more compelling story line or one that will be lacking in attraction for true sci-fi geeks likes us?
