Stargate Universe (SGU) is the third installment in the the Stargate brand. It is following 10 seasons of Stargate SG-1 and 5 seasons of Stargate Atlantis.
The talk from producers to the cast members is that SGU is going to be more character driven. It is out with rubber faced, English speaking aliens and in with juicy drama. Producers Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper are hoping that this shift will reach a much larger audience by attracting viewers that would normally shy away from the science fiction genre.
Here is the official synopsis of the show: SGU follows a band of soldiers, scientists and civilians, who must fend for themselves as they are forced through a Stargate when their hidden base comes under attack. The desperate survivors emerge aboard an ancient ship, which is locked on an unknown course and unable to return to Earth. Faced with meeting the most basic needs of food, water and air, the group must unlock the secrets of the ship's Stargate to survive. The danger, adventure and hope they find on board the Destiny will reveal the heroes and villains among them.
I am curious to see what new twists are woven into the SGU series. I am a big fan of SG-1 and Atlantis and I personally liked the rubber faced aliens. I enjoyed the story line for both shows and getting caught up in the mythologies that each one created.
What are your thoughts? Do you anticipate a richer and more compelling story line or one that will be lacking in attraction for true sci-fi geeks likes us?
